Chia: The Moon Cake Festival is coming up, let’s do moon cakes!
Libbie: A cake inspired by the moon?
Chia: Well, it’s not like a cake you’re used to.
Libbie: Do I have to make it?
Chia: No.
Libbie: I’m in.
The Mid-Autumn Festival (also known as The Moon Cake Festival) falls on the 15th day of the 8th month according to the Chinese lunar calendar (this year it’s September 19th). The grand festival is celebrated at the time of year when the moon is at its roundest and brightest. On the festival day, families gather to offer sacrifice to the moon, eat moon cakes, play with lanterns and in some regions do dragon and lion dances. The Moon Cake is the special food of Mid-Autumn Festival. People sacrifice moon cakes to the moon as an offering and eat them for celebration.
This week we’ll celebrate the Moon Cake Festival with our own Salted and Styled spin. Chia will share child hood memories of festival traditions with podcast host Brenda Anderson. Katherine Sandoz and Ashley Bailey will share artwork and floral design inspired by the moon and on Thursday…THE day, we’ll share Chia’s families moon cake recipe with a simple How-To. Stop by each day and join in the celebration.
PS The moon cakes are delicious!!
