Food is our trigger to all design. Its color may inform our fashion. It’s texture may inform our artwork. Its shape may inform our interiors and its flavor will always inform our table. This week our inspiration is a Chef’s Knife and the cult artist who creates them. A photo essay of cut hands and kind eyes. A muted gritty space and the kind intellectual man who inhabits it. Welcome into our home for a week of temptation inspired living and take a peek under the rug.

How To Wet Cure Bacon

Salt, sugar, time and constant temperature are the four key things needed when wet curing bacon. There are many different schools on the brines salt to sugar ratios. I am of the school that your brine should be sweeter rather than saltier.

strawberry sauce

We all know the pleasures of eating strawberries and some extol their aphrodisiacal properties, but none so well as Madame Tallien. Born to the aristocracy, given six names, and raised by nuns, this strawberry lover survived a march to the guillotine, bearing the fruit (ten) of multiple lovers and husbands (including the notoriously seedy and filthy Napoleon Bonaparte), several stints in prison and all of the great political and social shifts of the late 1700s. A style maven and risk-taker throughout her life, she insisted on bathing solely in the cure-all juice of strawberries.

A Life Inspired by Corn and Love

BACKSTORY: Geoffrey doesn’t like anyone to know the actual spelling of his name, and prefers the less bourgeois “Jeff” (his pedigree determined years ago in a wealthy Chicago suburb). Jeff’s great grandfather, grandfather and father all held seats on the Chicago Board of Exchange and were not pleased when he decided to apply to Agriculture School at The University of Illinois (a state school). Jillian (Jeff’s young wife) studied art at a lesser known art school in the Mid-West where she met Jeff at a summer party in Saugatuck, MI. When everyone else was wearing notable designers, Jillian arrived at the party wearing a simple white cotton sheath with a small noticeable tear at the hem.
