Long, short, whole, refined. Fourth place in most food group Olympics –just out of the hardware. This week on Salted and Styled we mill around the topic of grains. Today photographer, Chia Chong, shares some of her travel memories of the quiet rice fields in Vietnam.

Due to the shape of its leaves, named for the teeth of lions (dents de lion in French), the hardy dandelion grows pervasively over the entire globe and counts as one of nature’s most efficacious liver cleansers.

Mokpo in South Jeolla province is our educator and hostess’ first home. When Ho Shim Shaw picks up her knife to accomplish the tour de force of preparing a Korean feast, she thinks only of cutting “perfectly” for her guests. The varicolored and multi-textured meal and her stories open eyes (and mouths) to the some of the tastes, sounds and sites of a distant land that is somehow much more familiar than imagined.
