Chocolate Laced Art

November 7, 2012

This week our muse is chocolate. So I chose this painting of someone wearing a pair of classic Chuck Taylor sneakers. “Hmmm?” You say. What do these two seemingly unrelated things have in common? Is it just the color? Nope. It’s more. In my estimation I see a commonality that transcends the obvious color.

a slice of southern korea

October 29, 2012

Mokpo in South Jeolla province is our educator and hostess’ first home. When Ho Shim Shaw picks up her knife to accomplish the tour de force of preparing a Korean feast, she thinks only of cutting “perfectly” for her guests. The varicolored and multi-textured meal and her stories open eyes (and mouths) to the some of the tastes, sounds and sites of a distant land that is somehow much more familiar than imagined.

Coffee Break

October 17, 2012

Coffee inspires me daily I am afraid to admit just how much. What could be better than a drinkable driving force that lights a fire under me and makes me think I can do anything! No sugar or cream for me, please, the stronger and blacker, the better. The theme of coffee intrigues me, as do all the things artful that are drawn from its inspiration– artists who throw actual coffee on mixed media paintings, dye photographs to look old and right down to a charming tea towel appliquéd with a coffee cup.

You are My Sunshine

October 9, 2012

My fondness for the artwork featured this week on Salted & Styled is composed of a two-fold list of ingredients: one part eggs, the other part simple words.

bunny fricassée

If you are feeling any childhood strings of sentimentality when it’s time to roast a rabbit, consider employing the French language.

POW! BLAM! ZAP!

Cartoon action words are the only accurate way to convey my overly-and-ever-so-dramatic reaction to one of JenMarie Zeleznak’s new works “I Have a Feeling, That You’re Feeling Less These Days.” It is this kind of feeling that is almost but not quite a doubled-over-at-the-waist-and-catching-my-breath-moment (I am admittedly given to drama, I think I mentioned that previously?).

An Artfully Delivered Oyster Roast

September 26, 2012

This week we were all scheming on oysters (after all, they are in season, being that January is a month with the letter “r” in it) and naturally I thought of my friend and well-known Savannah based artist Katherine Sandoz. You see, every year she and her family host a big annual oyster roast on New Year’s Eve at their little farm in Vernonburg. In a word it is magical.

My Darling Clementine

September 22, 2012

Mandarin Orange and Clementine season is upon me and when asked what art inspired me, I naturally chose this mixed media piece by SCAD alumna Beth Loraine Bowman. So reminiscent of my darling clementines (yum!) with its deep texture, full-bodied orange hues, and glossy finish…I can almost smell (and taste) the sweetness now!

A Handful

September 21, 2012

Nothing intrigues us more than a well crafted bio. Artist Pedro Friedeberg’s bio, like his original hand chair, is pure genius.
