Inspired by Grains
Long, short, whole, refined. Fourth place in most food group Olympics –just out of the hardware. This week on Salted and Styled we mill around the topic of grains. Today photographer, Chia Chong, shares some of her travel memories of the quiet rice fields in Vietnam.
Inspired by the Beauty of Artichokes
This week, the artichoke serves as our muse. Layered shades of mid-century green with the faintest striae of deep purple. Edges so sharp they can leave a temporary mark in your hand and a center so buttery it will leave an indelible mark in your soul.
There’s a Strawberry on my Back
I grew up wanting to work in the fields, a dream my parents deferred my entire childhood.
Every elementary kid did it, or so it seemed. Each summer a chartered school bus would haul sleepy-eyed kids from their homes to the sprawling strawberry fields just a short 15-minute drive into the county. While I lazed around watching “Tom and Jerry” and lapping up “toasted rice” cereal, I imagined my schoolmates singing songs and forging friendships in my absence.
Inspired by Strawberries
Succulent, sensual and a showy shade of red peeking through a garden of green. The heady aroma of a woven basket filled with those from a pick-your-own roadside farm. Our muse this week is a fresh strawberry.
Monster Dance
Ok, so my carrot inspired self tried really hard to focus on finding the perfect children’s ensemble for today’s bunny day. Or to a one “fashion” tracked mind like myself…the day one gets to legally wear white shoes, and a new dress of course. The torture of being forced to not touch those brand new white shoes that sat in the box for weeks while releasing distinctive yummy smells of leather… still haunts me today.
The Unexamined Easter
I’m all about living a thoughtful, introspective existence, but some things are better left unexamined.
Like the Easter Bunny.
Inspired by Carrots
Straight green hair with short bangs and legs that go on for days. The midnight cravings of a furry mammal mother. A perfect carrot. This week on Salted and Styled we celebrate the simplicity and complexity of a simple carrot and all it signifies this time of year.
Quick Green Apple and Tomatillo Soup
Somedays a girl just has to say no to meat. Luckily those days don’t come often.
The Unredeemed Radish
I’ve never met a vegetable I didn’t like, at least not one I couldn’t make more palatable by bathing in butter, showering in salt or layering in liquid cheese. That is, until I met the radish. She came into my life somewhat unexpectedly, showing up in my dinner salad—her dusty, magenta skin and bright white meat a stark contrast to the sickly green manger of iceberg lettuce and sliced celery on which she rested.
Inspired by Radishes
Simple and subdued at first glance –a fan of green at dirt level. Really nothing to make you turn your head, but, beneath a blanket of soil lies the showy colors of a spring radish. Reds, purples, pinks and whites –painted with the same brush used by a celebrity rabbit. This week on Salted and Styled, we celebrate the peppered beauty of a simple radish.
